Links with
Africa coming - Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, PM, SVG. |
According to
excerpts of a speech given by the Prime Minister of St.
Vincent & The Grenadines (SVG), Dr. Ralph Gonsalves,
that Caribbean nation is moving in a practical way to build
greater links with Africa.
“We have to build trading links, cultural links, educational
links,” he told the hundreds who turned out to show their
solidarity and support for the struggles of the African
people.
The Prime Minister has previously called for the
establishment of an African Brazil Caribbean (ABC)
Commission. He specifically called for the inclusion of
Brazil because in North Eastern Brazil there are more people
of African descent outside of Africa, than anywhere else in
the world. |

According to
published reports, the SVG government is already in the
process of establishing relations with Brazil, with
Gonsalves expected to visit the South American country
sometime this year.
Among his first goals, reportedly, is an airline link
which comes down to Trinidad, goes down to Brazil and then
goes across to West Africa.
“And once you reach there, the whole continent is in your
grasp,” he explained. He also noted this country’s observer
status at the African Union and the African Union’s at
Caricom. In November, he is expected to visit Uganda where
he had lived for a year, while pursuing university studies
there.
“We want to ensure greater connections on a personal to
personal level between African and the Caribbean. That is
why we established diplomatic relationship with Ethiopia,”
he explained.
Dr. Gonsalves is the second sitting Prime Minister in the
Caribbean to have visited Ethiopia. He led a delegation,
which included a number of Rastafarians, to that country in
2005 and signed a visa abolition agreement between both
countries. |
