REGIONAL
CASE ANALYSIS COMPETITION SPONSORED BY FIRSTCARIBBEAN - A
FIRST FOR UWI |
Bridgetown, Barbados, May 22, 2007, - Under their
second three-year accord signed on October 30, 2006, The
University of the West Indies and FirstCaribbean
International Bank have made a firm commitment towards
facilitating the advancement of knowledge and understanding
of issues affecting business, trade and financial services
in the Caribbean.
To demonstrate this commitment, the University and the Bank
will be involved in another major history-making event when
the 2007 Case Analysis Competition is hosted by the Cave
Hill Campus on May 22nd at 5:00 p.m. in the CLICO Centre for
Teaching Excellence.
The hosting of the event has become more significant as the
competition has been spread to include all three campuses of
The University. The event was first held in 2005, with
participation of teams of students from the Cave Hill Campus
only. Since that time UWI and FirstCaribbean International
Bank have worked together to widen the scope of the
competition to reflect the mandate of both institutions.
2007 Competition
Fifteen students comprising three teams of five students
each will be taking part in the finals, expected to be
keenly contested, given the rich history of excellence in
debating at the regional University.
To further support this year’s initiative, being spearheaded
by the UWI’s Department of Management Studies & Business
Development Office, with support from the Bank, a blueprint
was developed for the hosting of the regional competition
that is expected to become a key feature of the University’s
calendar. It is further envisaged that, ultimately, the
competition will be further expanded to become an
international event.
In preparation for this year’s activity, the Cave Hill
Campus has integrated this case study into its curriculum
offering in Human Resources Management for level two
students. Students will therefore have the opportunity to
put classroom theory into practice while evaluating a
regional case that focuses on recent organisational issues
and events.
Awards
Over US$5,000 has been allocated for the award of prizes and
other incentive awards as part of the competition. Teams
will be vying for the prestigious University of the West
Indies/FirstCaribbean International Bank Challenge Trophy,
while a number of individual prizes will also be at stake.
Pre-competition Workshop
FirstCaribbean International Bank has also worked closely
with the University to help students become
competition-ready. On May 21, the day before the
competition, the finalists will take part in a presentation
skills workshop, the content of which has been specially
developed by the Bank’s Learning and Development Unit. The
workshop is being conducted by Ms. Suzanne King, Regional
Training Manager, Personal and Leadership Development at the
Bank.
Funding for the regional case analysis competition is being
provided by the FirstCaribbean International Comtrust
Foundation, the registered charity which implements the
Bank’s overall corporate and social responsibility strategy.
Background to Competition
The Case Analysis Competition is a direct result of the Case
Study Development Project, a component of the first
Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2003, which involved
the researching and writing of a series of cases related to
the merger of Barclays Bank PLC and CIBC. This project was
spearheaded by Professor of International Management and
Head of the Department of Management Studies on the Cave
Hill Campus, Betty Jane Punnett and drew on faculty from the
Management Studies departments across all three campuses.
The cases, which cover the disciplines of human resource
management, management information systems, business
strategy and policy and marketing, were completed and
published in collaboration with the University of Western
Ontario’s Ivey Business School, who distributes them to
universities through Ivey Publishing system worldwide,
ensuring that they remain key resource materials for
undergraduate and postgraduate students across the
disciplines throughout the region and beyond.
The UWI and FirstCaribbean agreed to launch the cases by
hosting a competition to build and reward the skills of
students of the University in business case analysis. To
this end, students of Cave Hill’s summer course in Business
Strategy were selected to be the pioneers of the
competition, held in 2005. This year, another case developed
out of this research, Harmonisation of Compensation and
Benefits for FirstCaribbean International Bank, will be used
as the subject matter to be debated among the teams. |
