ATM Skimming, Bank account stealing - 3 Romanians on trial in St. Maarten

Reports out of St. Maarten, state that 3 Romanian nationals ages, 22, 32 & 38 are currently on trial for attempting to defraud money via automatic teller machines (ATMs) in St. Maarten.

The three were arrested on Feb 2, after reports of suspicious activity at a Windward Islands Bank (WIB) automated teller machine (ATM) in the Simpson Bay area. They were found in possession of a "skimming" device and a large amount of money (US and Euro).

Skimming

When skimming, scammers attach a device to the card entry slot of the ATM. This records the details of card's magnetic strips as they are inserted into the machine. A miniature camera is hidden at an angle overlooking the PIN pad which allows the criminals to capture the PIN number being entered. The crooks then  build cloned cards which are then used to steal money from the victim's accounts.

The problem is global and to combat it banking institutions in some countries have installed anti-skimming devices. One such company is Lloyds TSB who in 2006., announced it was installing such devices on all of its UK ATMs.
