April
20, 2007: With less than 2 weeks to general elections in
the Bahamas, a local newspaper is reporting "shocking" acts
of election related violence in the densely populated
capital, Nassau.
In addition to various reports of vandalism in the past
week, on Wednesday arson was reported at the constituency
office of the former leader of the opposition Free National
Movement (FNM), Mr. Tommy Turnquest. According to Mr
Turnquest in a speech to supporters at a mass rally on
Thursday evening, the lost in the office was complete in
terms of paper files and computer data.
The local newspaper also claims that they have also received
reports of a bullet being shot through the window of a
Campaign Office of the governing Progressive Liberal Party (PLP)
which luckily was empty.
The Bahamas is well-known for its violence free elections
and leaders on both sides are speaking out firmly against
the incorporation of such acts into the hotly contested
affair.
