West Indies Cricket - Fighting
to survive? |
April, 02, 2007: On March 10th,
www.anguillasports.com
wrote an article entitled "What Next For Windies" that
stated the following: "evidence suggests this will be
the series that cements the decline of West Indies cricket
and washes the distant memories of grandeur out to sea".
The recent release from the WICB suggests strongly that they
too are finally drawing the same conclusions. After
comprehensive defeats to Australia, New Zealand and Sri
Lanka, the West Indies have once again fallen to a new low.
The pit however is not bottomless and for the first time in
the history of Cricket in the region the game may be
threatened. That this is so, is evident by the silence that
echoes from near empty stadiums in Antigua. This island is
home to knowledgeable, dedicated West Indian fans who
without doubt would fill the stands despite the stifling ICC
restrictions, if their cricketing spirit had not been
comprehensively battered by the hapless West Indies team of
the past decade.
THE RELEASE FROM THE WICB READS AS FOLLOWS:
"ST. JOHN'S, Antigua - The West Indies
Cricket Board (WICB) has recently established a Governance
Committee under the chairmanship of former Jamaica Prime
Minister P.J. Patterson to look at the structure and future
of West Indies Cricket.
The Committee, which includes University of the West Indies
Vice Chancellor Sir Alister McIntyre and noted author Dr.
Ian McDonald, is now inviting memoranda or written
submissions from West Indies Cricket Stakeholders to examine
the composition and structure of the WICB and to make
recommendations which will improve its overall operations,
governance effectiveness, team performance and strengthen
its credibility and public support.
The primary purpose of this exercise is to identify the
mechanisms and processes that will return the West Indies to
the pinnacle of world cricket and thereafter sustain the
region's ascendancy in the game. The aim is to
restore and maintain pride in West Indies
cricket, thereby strengthening the bond
between the people of the Caribbean and the game.
Please send your submissions by April 30, 2007 to:
Mr. Tony Deyal (tdeyal@windiescricket.com)
Secretary of the Governance Committee
