Airline
merger causes hike in inter-island travel fares in St. Lucia |
March 30, 2007: Fares for inter-island travel in the
Caribbean have always been steep, now travelers and
hoteliers say the merger of two of the major commuter
carriers in the region appears to have made matters worse.
The St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association is so concerned
that it wants Caribbean Governments to intervene.
At George F.L. Charles Airport in Castries Lidia St. Helen
is waiting to board a flight that will take her to Anguilla
via St. Martin.
She said a few months ago she would have paid $600 for a
ticket but the price is now over a $1000.
“I have to be suffering because of the merger between
Caribbean Star and LIAT and right now I don’t really have a
choice because it is the only flight going there. I have to
pay the money because I want to so…” said Ms. St. Helen.
Caribbean Star and LIAT announced a commercial alliance
earlier this year while inter-regional travel has soared.
It is a source of concern to the St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism
Association.
The Association President, Colin Hunt, notes that the
Caribbean is a significant source of visitors to St. Lucia
and the high cost of inter-regional travel can impact on
visitor arrivals.
As a result Mr. Hunt believes Caribbean governments must not
only use their prerogative of a route control to create
competition but also look to alternative means of travel for
people of the region.
