SCANDAL DERAILS BRIGHT BAHAMIAN POLITICIAN'S CAREER
Monday,
February 18, 2006: NASSAU,
Bahamas - The embattled Bahamas Immigration Minister Shane Gibson resigned
Sunday night over his questionable relationship with Anna Nicole Smith,
apologizing to Bahamians for any embarrassment he may have caused the country.
"To the extent that my beloved country has in any way suffered from anything
that I was perceived to have said or done, I want to apologize to the Bahamian
people as a whole," Gibson said.

Mr
Gibson was under much criticism at home over the past months for "fast tracking", Anna
Nicole's application for Permanent Residency in the Bahamas. Subsequent to
her death his criticism became international when the Nassau Tribune published two photos on its
Feb 12-front page clearly
showing Smith and Gibson embracing on her bed in what many deemed to be
suggestive postures. The photos were picked up by the international press and
continue to make headlines.
Shane Gibson was elected to Bahamian Parliament in May of 2002 as the
representative of Golden Gates New Providence for the Progressive Liberal Party
(PLP). After a stint as Minister of Housing and National Insurance he was
appointed as Immigration Minister in February 2005, primarily to address the
highly charged issue of Haitian illegal immigration in the
island chain.
