The Valley,
Anguilla: Anguilla imports for January 2009 totalled,
EC$49.7 million, a 23.0% decrease over the corresponding
2008 January value according to International Merchandise
Trade Statistics Summary, from the Statistics Department.
The Standard Industrial Trade Classification (S.I.T.C.)
categories; Consumption, Primary and Capital Goods,
contributed 58.4%, 25.7% and 15.9% respectively to the total
import bill for January 2009.
While all S.I.T.C. categories
(experienced a decrease the report shows a 40.4% decline -
largest overall, was observed for Capital Goods. In this
category, the decrease in value of import of household
appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators,
microwave ovens etc. were some of the contributors to the
decrease in this category. Vehicles also contributed EC$2.2
million compared to the 4.5 million in 2008.
Among Consumption Goods, Beverages and
Tobacco (17.1% contributor), experienced the largest
increase (39.3%) over its January 2008 figure in part due to
the increase value of imports of items such as rum, water
and other beverages.
Manufactured Goods, typically the largest
contributor to Consumption Good Imports, decreased a
whopping 51.9% from its January 2008 figure of EC$16.1
million to EC$7.7 million in January 2009. This decrease was
in part attributed to a decrease in the import value of
items such as tiles, window & doors, steel, quicklime as
well as blocks; whose value decreased from EC$1.5 million to
less than EC$0.1 million. Misc. Manufactured Articles
another usual main contributors to the Consumption Goods
category also experienced a significant decrease of
12.6% over its corresponding 2008 figure.
Exports which include re-exports and domestic exports for
the month of January were EC$2.1 million, a 12.5% decrease
over its January 2008 value of EC$2.4 million. Domestic
exports totaled EC$1.0 million in January 2008 as compared
to EC$0.4 million in January 2008, a 181.8% increase.
Anguilla’s balance of trade for January 2009 was in
deficit of EC$47.6 million, a deficit decrease by 23.4% when
compared to the EC$62.2 million in the same period of 2008.
