DFMR Staff
complete workshop in ‘Fisheries Management and Data
Collection’
Date Posted: April 29, 2008.
(Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources, The Valley,
Anguilla) - The staff of the Department of Fisheries and
Marine Resources (DFMR) recently completed a three day
training workshop in ‘Fisheries Management and Data
Collection’ and a one-and-half day Strategic Planning
exercise. During the 3-day workshop, participants were
exposed to the basic principles of fisheries management and
the importance of data collection in the decision making
process. While during the one-and half-day strategic
planning session, a plan was devised for the fisheries
sector in Anguilla.
The aim of the training workshop and strategic planning
exercise was two-fold: to provide staff at the DFMR with the
knowledge and skills necessary for the implementation of an
ongoing comprehensive data collection programme for the
fisheries sector of Anguilla; and to re-emphasise to staff
the important role of the DFMR in the management of
Anguilla’s fisheries resources and marine environment. Some
of the topics covered in the training workshop included:
Principles of Fisheries Management; Elements of Fisheries
Biology; The Biology of Management; and Building a Fisheries
Management Team.
The vision developed by DFMR staff for the fisheries sector
in Anguilla, ‘Vision 2025’, is “a respected fisheries sector
with informed fishers, fishing in a sustainable manner
utilising improved fishing facilities and boats, supported
by a Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources that
impacts positively on all publics and manages the sector, in
a participatory way, for the benefit of all stakeholders.”
The training workshop and strategic planning exercise was
funded by the Government of Anguilla (the Department of
Fisheries and Marine Resources and the Department of
Environment), and facilitated by Mr. Peter A. Murray,
Programme Officer at the OECS Environment and Sustainable
Development Unit (OECS-ESDU). The DFMR take this opportunity
to thank the OECS, OECS-ESDU in particular, for their
support over the years and for making the most recent
training workshop and strategic planning exercise possible.
