APPLE
Theatre to Return to Anguilla
Date Posted: April 09, 2008.
From June 23 – July 18, 2008, the APPLE (Anguillian Young
People Performing Live Entertainment) Theatre Company will
offer APPLE 2008. The programme will be rooted in the
company’s past work with young people in Anguilla between
1998 and 2003. During this period, more than 250 young
people were provided with the opportunity to learn about
various elements of theatre arts, including performance,
design, and administration, as well as to develop important
social and organizational skills.
A key component of the 2008 programme will be an emphasis on
harnessing leadership. A total of twenty five young adults
between the ages of 19-30 will be given the opportunity to
learn the company’s methods of coaching and facilitation.
The focus will be on cooperative teaching and learning, peer
mentorship, creative thinking, problem-solving, and project
management which will be reinforced through the creation and
presentation of performances. This is in addition to the up
to 75 young persons between the ages of 13-18 who will be
eligible to participate in the wider programme.
The philosophy behind the design of the programme is that
there is space for new tools in creating works of art that
reflect local arts and cultural traditions. APPLE 2008 will
begin with an introduction to various new arts offerings,
continuing with conversations exploring how various selected
forms could enhance local artistry, and workshops by trained
Anguillian facilitators to help groups of young people make
new works of performance art.
A central goal of the program is to increase communication
among young people ages 12-30, thereby creating positive,
long-lasting relationships and deepening community values.
The programme which will be funded by the Ministry of Social
Development, Department of Youth and Culture and other
Private Sector partners will be managed by the founder of
the APPLE Theatre Company Ms. Eleanor Stacey and a team of
local and visiting arts professionals and enthusiasts.
