(The Valley, Anguilla) Disaster Management is taking new
directions in Anguilla with the roll out of the Anguilla
National Warning System.Designed to provide emergency
alerts and notification, this system takes advantage of
multiple communications means to “get the message out”.
Following a successful pilot project last year, the first
phase of the system went live with a National test on,
Friday March 28th at 11:00am.
Included in this part of the project is the roll out of
computer popup technology on government computers, FM radio
receivers for the local radio stations and cable company,
key members of the National Emergency Operations team,
Government Ministers and Radio Broadcast override to Radio
Anguilla.
Emergency warning and notification for emergencies include,
for example, a Tsunami, Tropical Storm, Hurricane or missing
child and can be generated by the Royal Anguilla Police
Force, The Department of Disaster Management and Health.
General notification can be generated and received
optionally from The Anguilla Tourist Board and Anguilla
Hotel and Tourism Association and the Department of
Information Technology and E-Government Services (DITES).
The second phase of this project will be the roll out of a
website through which the public can register to receive
emergency, and tourism information messages. Information on
purchasing a warning system FM radio receiver, will also be
included on the website.
“Anguilla is recognized as a forerunner in the
implementation of comprehensive all hazard Alert, Warning
and Notification technology in the Caribbean” stated Mrs.
Elizabeth Klute, Director of the Department of Disaster
Management (DDM).
Partners in the project include DITES, The Anguilla Tourist
Board and the Anguilla Hotel and Tourism Association, Radio
Anguilla, RAPF, DDM, and the Media Coordination Group of the
National Disaster Management Committee. ViaRadio,
Incorporated and Hormann America Incorporated, two leaders
in the field of emergency notification, have provided the
Technology.
A special thanks is extended to WebLinks for proving
wireless internet to enable the testing of the national
system.
