(The Valley Anguilla) February 21, 2008: The
Anguilla National Trust has received reports that
individuals have been entering Fountain Cavern without
permission. As the sole shareholder of the Fountain National
Park Corporation and as an institution mandated to
facilitate the preservation of Anguilla’s national heritage,
the Anguilla National Trust finds it very disturbing that
persons are defying the publicly advertised fact that the
Fountain Cavern is and will remain closed until further
notice.
The Anguilla National Trust would like to inform the
general public that:
- For their safety and security, and to facilitate the
preservation of the Fountain’s rich archaeological, cultural
and historical significance, anyone found in the Fountain
Cavern or to have voyaged into the Fountain Cavern will be
prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law;
- Persons who are interested in seeing Arawak petroglyphs
or who are interested in learning about Anguilla’s national
heritage as it relates to the Amerindians could do so by
taking the Heritage Tour being conducted by the Anguilla
National Trust. This tour will that will include a visit to
Big Spring Heritage Site where petroglyphs can also be seen.
The Anguilla National Trust understands that while the
Fountain is a national treasure that should be enjoyed and
appreciated by both residents and tourists, safety does come
first. At the moment, the necessary infrastructure to
facilitate visitors to the site is not in place. Thus, the
Fountain will remain closed until these issues are
adequately addressed.
