August 2, 2007:  The opening ceremony for Anguilla Carnival 2007 was a breath a fresh air. It's just what was needed for the capacity crowd that gathered at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Center on Wednesday evening to welcome in Anguilla's biggest festival.

Governor and Mrs. Andrew George, Minister of Finance Victor Banks and Minister of Social Services Evans McNeil were among the dignitaries on hand to join in the celebrations. The evening was hosted by Dr. Linda Banks and "Numsy", a local comedian who helped to fill the evening with laughter and celebration.

The Carnival committee should be  congratulated for their success in creating an opening event which was truly family friendly and encompassed all the treasured aspects of Anguilla Carnival.

Speeches given by organizers, police commissioner and government ministers were welcoming and firm in the request for a peaceful and enjoyable Festival 2007. Commissioner  Benjamin's address included witty excerpts of recent calypso commentary to highlight special points of concern. Further emphasizing the importance of the messages and commentary on current issues that calypsonians contribute during this festival season. He emphasized the high level of security that will accompany the events and the low level of tolerance for any acts of violence. The commissioner made known that the street events will be videotaped and that cameras to assist his forces were being mounted in Sandy Ground for some of the events in that area.

As a part of the evening Tribute was paid to the very much missed, but not forgotten 'Lord Anything' who made significant contributions to Anguilla life and  calypso. Tributes were made by fellow calypsonians and a montage of video and still images were displayed in his honour.

The audience were treated to highlights of the pomp and pageantry to come next week as the former and current competitor's in the Miss Tiny Tot, Prince & Princess and CCB Talented Teen were introduced and paraded on stage. Just before the capacity crowd in the Landsome Bowl was treated to a gorgeous display of Fireworks, Anguilla Festival 2007 was officially opened with Minister of Social Services, and the reigning Miss Tiny Tot opening a gigantic lock with an equally huge key to Carnival 2007. The evening was beautifully capped  just as the stage doors were opened with the loud bang and crackle of the Fireworks display and the 2007 Miss Anguilla pageant contestants parading in full costume regalia. Let the festivities begin!
