July 20, 2007: History
continued to unfold in Anguilla today as hundreds of
Anguillians protested in a peaceful energetic manner
from Webster's park to the residence of Governor Andrew
George in Old TA. The protestors delivered messages on
placards and a signed petition detailing
requests for:
- A Referendum on any
constitutional changes.
- A Judicial
Inquiry into the business
between the Government of Anguilla and the developers
of Viceroy in Barnes Bay.
The march started off relatively small and grew as
it proceeded under light overcast skies on a typically hot Anguilla
summer morning. Several factors including the
inclement weather yesterday, working hours and fear of
retributions common to small societies like Anguilla, may have kept the number of
protestors smaller than what it otherwise would have been.
It was quite apparent however, that a strong undercurrent of
dissatisfaction in a proportion of the population is
manifesting itself loudly on the surface in an island that,
post-1967, is not known for public acts of defiance or
demonstration.
