Four
Convicted for the 2005 murder of Dr. J. Petersen in Brazil -
Dr. Petersen was a well know Anthropologist in Anguilla. |
July 11, 2007
Four men, including a former police officer and his son,
were convicted and sentenced Tuesday in Brazil to nearly 30
years in prison for killing UVM anthropology professor James
Petersen in August 2005, in the Amazon rain forest
town of Iranduba, Brazil.
The 51 year old victim, then the Chairman and Associate
Professor of the Department of Anthropology at the
University of Vermont, was shot while eating dinner at a
roadside restaurant. He was at the time working with the
University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, on a joint study known as
the Central Amazon Project and was on a research field trip
with colleagues.
Dr. Petersen also performed several archeological studies in
Anguilla for many years leading up to his untimely death. In
1986 he began analysing Amerindian pottery excavated from
the Fountain Cavern site by David Watters of the Carnegie
Museum. In 1992 he and Dr. John Crock started the Anguilla
Archaeology Project, analysing the Anguilla
Archaeological and Historical Society's (AAHS) collections
and beginning excavations at various sites. |
From 1997 to 2005,
Dr. Petersen had conducted five field trips to Anguilla with
students from the University of Vermont and by all accounts
was deeply committed to understanding Amerindian life in
Anguilla and communicating his understanding to
Anguillians.
His murder impacted many friends, colleagues and associates
in Anguilla.
