May 4, 2007: “Vessel Arnolf (Bavaria 35),
abandoned 10th, December 06 mid-Atlantic, drifted to Anguilla and was found 2nd March.
Vessel Stella di Mare, (39' Grand Soleil), abandoned 13
January 1000 miles east of Grenada, drifted to
Anguilla and was found 5th March.
I (Bill Bailey) am working
for both insurance companies. Both boats lost
rudders and the crew were picked up, one by a
tanker and one by another vessel.”
Bailey learned that the French crew of Arnolf,
Paul Bourgie and Jacques Clermont, were
participating in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers
from Las Palmas to St. Lucia last December when
they collided with a submerged object, possibly
a whale, and battled unsuccessfully to control
their vessel for 48 hours. Skipper Trevor
Goodson on his ARC yacht Be-Bop-A-Lula heard
their distress call and rescued them.
Arnolf completed the crossing without the crew.
Bailey, working for both insurance companies,
says, “The attached photo is amazing to me, both
boats tied up together in Anguilla having
crossed the Atlantic without rudders—without
damage!” |
