Holds Meeting To Discuss National Crime Issues |
The Valley, Anguilla, Wednesday, April 11th, 2007
----- The Government of Anguilla held a meeting at the Chief
Minister’s Conference Room today to discuss several issues
of national importance relative to Crime. This Meeting
lasted for three hours and was held in an effort to afford
Ministers, shareholders and stakeholders of Anguilla to seek
measures and policies to mitigate the rising tide of
criminal activities particularly the upsurge in gun related
robberies. The meeting was considered timely and will
achieve relevance beyond this particular time.

The Ministers of Government and others present are outraged
and incensed about this wave of criminality and convened the
meeting to formulate a strategy to deal with it. Mr. Fleming
pointed out that Anguilla is now sweltering under changing
times and as such steering the course that has been
chartered is going to demand more vigilance, tenacity,
determination and commitment than ever before.

Chief Minister Fleming said that the latest criminal
activities serve to remind us that there are those in our
midst intent on destroying our society for their own
sinister purposes. Mr. Fleming said they will not be allowed
to succeed. Government is employing the entire Anguillian
society not to succumb to a growing sense of powerlessness
against these criminal elements. Our society cannot be
allowed to decay any further and all living within Anguilla,
as well as without, must play their part in ensuring that
criminal behaviours are eradicated from our midst. Crime
affects us all. It impacts our national development
negatively, it threatens our personal security; it severely
affects the investment climate; it impacts negatively on the
Tourism Industry; and it reduces all our efforts at
developing a place fit for human habitation.
Out of the meeting there is an understanding that a new
approach must be forthcoming; one that entails more than
just the Royal Anguillla Police Force and the Criminal
Justice System. It must entail changes in the way we raise
our children, more stringent controls in the Immigration
System, provision of opportunities for the disenfranchised,
and a sense of humanity and respect for life and property
amongst other things.
Government recognizes that success does not immune a nation
from issues and concerns. Government is calling upon every
person to an active citizen, not spectators – to let us work
together to further improve our communities and protect our
lives. The time is now for us to focus all our energies on
the real issues affecting us.
